Southern Film Festivals

The association of festivals dedicated to the cinemas of Asia, Africa and Latin America, which was created four years ago at the proposal of José Sánchez Montes, the director of the Granada Film Festival Cines del Sur, held its most recent meeting in Qatar.

Southern Film Festivals was created during the 1st Granada Film Festival Cines del Sur (June, 2007). The purpose of the platform is to facilitate the exchange of information and the development of collaborative efforts that further the objectives shared by all Festivals of the South. Such objectives were agreed upon in the Granada Statement.

The four encounters that have taken place since the group’s creation have contributed to the development and implementation of the proposals and aims agreed upon by its members. The encounters have laid solid foundations for collaboration in various fields, such as publications and communication.

The new meeting was held in Qatar. The invitation was extended by one of the association’s members, Abbas Arnaout, director of the Al Jazeera International Documentary Festival. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Pusan International Film Festival, Guadalajara International Film Festival, Osian’s Cinefan of New Delhi, the African Film Festival of Tarifa, the Carthage Film Festival, Zanzibar International Film Festival, FESPACO of Burkina Faso, the International Latin American Film Festival of Huelva, Kerala International Film Festival and the Granada Film Festival Cines del Sur.

In Qatar, the topics addressed pertained to promoting and disseminating the platform’s collaborative efforts through the Internet, with the creation of work and communication tools; improving the circulation of films; and the creation of common contents for a specific section (the SFF section) which each festival can choose to programme either in full or in part. In addition, an analysis was begun of the systems by which films are distributed in countries of the south, in order to ascertain just how the festivals belonging to the association can best help filmmakers and producers.

The fifth meeting is to be held during the Granada Film Festival Cines del Sur, which will take place between the 12th and the 18th of June, 2010.
